When Saeed Shafa began making plans for the inaugural Tiburon International Film Festival, it was with the simple motto of encouraging local residents to "understand the world through film." It was the June of 2001 and he had set the festival to coincide with the Persian New Year, which takes place each year on the first day of spring.

Editor’s note: We're publishing a series of interviews with filmmakers and others who work in Iranian cinema. Many of our subjects were involved with the Iranian Film Festival last year. Today's interview is with Iranian born Saeed Shafa, who currently lives in the United States and is the founder of both the Iranian Film Festival – San Francisco, which will enter its 4th year this September, and the longer-established Tiburon International Film Festival.
