Petaluma International Film Festival makes its debut, October 15, 2009.

Press Democrat: "Saeed Shafa is the brains behind the Petaluma International Film Festival. With a master’s degree in film, Shafa’s passion for movies led him to found the Tiburon International Film Festival 10 years ago. His dream, however, was to bring a festival to Petaluma."

San Fran shows Iran films...

The second annual, two-day Iranian Film Festival will be held in San Francisco September 19-20. The Iranian Film Festival (IFF) showcases the independent feature and short films created about or by the Iranian Diaspora. This year’s festival will focus on Iranian women and Iranian women filmmakers, and will include a conversation with Iranian actress and director Gohar Kheirandish. Kheirandish was born in Shiraz in 1954. She began her acting career in 1970 when she was in high school. Her first film, “Roozha-ye Entezaar,” (The days of waiting) was screened in 1986. She later went on to receive her acting and directing degree from the University of Tehran’s, Daneshkadeh-e Honarha-ye Zeeba, or The College of Beautiful Arts. Kheirandish’s first nationally acclaimed film was “Baanoo” (The Lady), after which her career in the film industry took off. The Iranian actress has starred in 41 films and many television series. The festival will screen more than 20 films including Nahid Persson’s “The Queen and I,” Massoud Bakhshi’s “Tehran Has No More Pomegranates,” Claus Strigel’s “Moon Sun Flower Game” and Sam Ali Kasahani’s “Tehran: Another Side.”

Iranian Film Festival- San Francisco 9/19-20

[TEHRAN BUREAU] When Saeed Shafa began making plans for the inaugural Tiburon International Film Festival, it was with the simple motto of encouraging local residents to “understand the world through film.” It was the June of 2001 and he had set the festival to coincide with the Persian New Year, which takes place each year on the first day of spring....

Jean-Luc Godard's new film 'Socialisme'

Jean-Luc Godard's new film is 'Socialisme' & 'Islam is East's West'. Master filmmaker, in his seventies, is still at his top form. When I was a film student, I had the privilege to meet JLG at the Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley. This was one of his very rare appearances in the US.

'Take Part' Interview

"It is hard to say how much change the present situation will bring to Iran. But it has changed a lot of things and opened an avenue for both sides to realize that this is a very different time we are living in. Things will not go back to where it was before. The young generation in Iran will carry the torch into the future and [they] need to be accepted and not ignored."

'Shafa' Stadium!

When I heard that there is a stadium with my last name 'Shafa' somewhere in the world, I was a little skeptical until I saw this:

"Shafa Stadium is located in Baku, Azerbaijan. It is used by FC Inter Baku, Olimpik Baku and Bakili Baku. It has a capacity of 8,152. It was built in 2001. It is an all-seater stadium, and is surrounded by practice fields and administration buildings."

Films in Review

There are many Iranian filmmakers in the US and abroad who wish to have their films seen and their voices heard. In efforts to get a better understanding of who is the Iranian filmmaker I asked Saeed Shafa of the Iranian Film Festival and the Tiburon International Film Festival. He stated, “There are two groups of Iranian filmmakers. Those who make their films in Iran and those who make them outside Iran. They are both Iranians, but their films and way of thinking are different. Most of those making films outside Iran are born in various countries and are not familiar with the culture inside Iran. Therefore, their films have a different look and angle. And those who make their films in Iran are divided into 2 groups too. First group who makes films for the local market, inside the country and for the people of Iran. The second group who make their films for a foreign audience, outside Iran, mainly for the western audiences.”
